Case Study: Student Community

A year in development the site launched with a UCAS backed mailout to all A-Level students who had received entry into a UK University for the academic year 2006/7. This "virtual freshers week" invited users to meet fellow students before they started, even enabling them to join clubs and societies ahead of their arrival.

It was an immediate success and has become the most effective promotion ever undertaken by a UCAS partner.

A closed environment Univillage allows any user with a '.ac.uk' email address to join up and participate in the community. Since the summer it has spread much wider than its initial target audience, and now has a sizeable representation across all academic years.

The principle areas of activity amongst students are the creation of a profile or a blog, uploading and downloading content (text, image, audio and video), making new friends, organising events as well as participating in a plethora of online forums. New functionality is being added all the time and word of mouth continues to be the prime motivation for sign up.
